Bulldogs

There are several varieties of Bulldogs created in the 20th century. The original Bulldog appeared long ago in England with the main purposes of doing routine farm work, controlling large cattle, and hunting large game. Those dogs descended from the Alaunts, the Mastiff-type massive and powerful dogs. Early Bulldogs were very agile, endurable, courageous, strong, and aggressive. They were able to chase bulls, bears, and boars, hang onto their nose, and bring them down. In the medieval times, Bulldogs were used solely for baiting bulls and other large animals. They lost their agility and became very stocky, compact, and low-set dogs with a large head, undershot jaws, and deadly grip. For several centuries, they were selected for the blood sport of bull baiting.

When bull baiting was banned in 1835, Bulldogs lost their main function and had to change much. The English Bulldog of the 19th century is actually extinct. What we call the English Bulldog today is a mix of the Bulldog and Pug. To preserve the unique looks of the breed, breeders of the 20th century had to get rid of the aggression of the Bulldog and turn it into a friendly family companion.

The English Bulldog of today is perhaps the most exaggerated dog breed. Its appearance causes health problems and makes this breed difficult to live with. To improve health and personality of the English Bulldog, French Bulldog was created. French Bulldogs are not simply smaller Bulldogs; they are a separate breed with very easy-going personality and improved health. American Bulldogs are the direct descendants of the old time English Bulldogs. The American Bulldog is tall, energetic, and not very massive.

All Bulldog varieties have much in common. They are strong, protective, devoted to the family, and very playful. They make good guards and watchdogs and exceed in conformation and obedience. All Bulldogs enjoy being in the center of attention and should not be left alone for a long time. Most Bulldogs slobber, drool, and snore. They cannot stand hot and cold weather. Exercise needs of these dogs are low, but daily walks and play are necessary for all Bulldogs.
