These dogs appeared in the 19th century. They are smaller in size than their standard-sized counterparts, but they have the same wrinkly muzzle, sturdy body and sweet temperament. They also contributed their gene to the makeup of the French breed. These breeds are the offspring of old Mastiff-type dogs, which were engaged in bull baiting competitions. Those dogs were very strong and agile, and a bunch of them could put down a raging bull. Such scenes were very popular among people.
