The English variety of the breed measures from 13 to 15 inches at the shoulders and weighs up to 50 pounds. The main characteristics of this breed are a large heavy head with a protruding lower jaw and a short muzzle. The head and face are heavily wrinkled. The coat is short, and lying close to the body. The coat color varies from brown, tan, white to brindle and piebald.
