The origin of the breed is still not very clear. A conventional opinion is that the breed was a mere by-product of the English breeding. Small, undeveloped species with erect ears were not a success in England though the French welcomed those dogs. The dogs have never been bred for one purpose only; either it was fighting or hunting large game. However, history shows that the dog was a frequent competitor in dog fighting.
