These dogs were developed from the English breed. They were brought by early settlers and were very helpful in their everyday life. At that time, these dogs were selected for working qualities; conformation was not so important. That’s why this variety is larger that its English ancestors. First dogs of this breed were very different in appearance and there was no strict breed standards. Up to nowadays, there exist several types of this breed in the USA, each one having its own functions.

These dogs produce an impression of great strength and endurance and exhibit well-knit, sturdy compact frame. These dogs are evaluated as working dogs for many years. They are not aggressive and these negative traits of character should be penalized. Original viciousness is completely bred out of the breed. Actually, these are very friendly and family oriented dogs. They are good for keeping in an apartment if they are given enough exercises; so these are very calm, cool and collected dogs in the home environment. They can be very playful and energetic too.
